"The 2023 Green FinTech Achievement Showcase" Reveals Significant Progress, Attracting Industry Engagement
2023-12-13
The Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC), in partnership with the Taiwan Financial Services Roundtable, hosted the ''2023 Green FinTech Achievement Showcase'' on December 13, 2023. This event displayed the results of this year's thematic promotion campaign in Green FinTech, inviting financial institutions, FinTech companies, and tech firms for knowledge sharing and networking.
Green Finance and FinTech are key financial policies actively promoted in recent years, and FinTech players have shown that they have significant potential for supporting Green Finance. Hence, one of the initiatives under the Green Finance Action Plan 3.0 includes conducting thematic promotion campaigns for Green FinTech. This year's campaign featured international symposia, domestic and international innovation competitions, and proof-of-concept activities, and yielded fruitful outcomes. The FSC announced the results of these innovation competitions and the FinTechSpace proof-of-concept activities on December 13.
In the international competition section, the FSC mentored Shin Kong Financial Holding Co., Ltd. in participating in the Global Financial Innovation Network's (GFIN) Greenwashing TechSprint with the ''Anti-Greenwashing Genie'' project, which won the ''Globe Trotter'' award. The project employed technologies like Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and web crawlers to collect corporate data from the Taiwan Stock Exchange's ESG InfoHub and the UK-based Insig.AI's ESG Report database. Utilizing Microsoft's generative AI technology, it automated the process of data extraction and interpretation to calculate companies' ESG scores and assess potential greenwashing risks. The showcase also featured presentations from Shin Kong Financial Holding Co., Ltd. and collaborating ecosystem entities, including the Taiwan Stock Exchange, Microsoft, and Insig.AI, which shared insights on ESG data development, AI support in Green Finance, and the identification of greenwashing risks.
In the domestic section there were two Green FinTech innovation competitions this year. One was the ''Digital Sandbox Innovation Competition'' held by the FinTechSpace, and the other was the ''Sustainable Finance and Net Zero Innovation Competition'' held by the Financial Industry Net Zero Working Platform's Promotion Workstream, convened by First Financial Holding Co., Ltd. Winning teams presented their solutions for advancing Green FinTech and sustainable net-zero initiatives, such as All Win Fintech Co., Ltd.'s ''Green Sustainable Behavior Account'', Anfu Co., Ltd.'s ''Real Estate Risk Gatekeeper'', National Taipei University of Business's ''e-Carbon Clean & Major Carbon Reduction Loan'', and a collaborative project between Shih Hsin University and National Taipei University of Business titled ''Immediate Carbon Reduction, Expedited Achievement''.
In the FinTechSpace section, this year also saw new startups effectively utilizing resources like the Digital Sandbox and Corporate Labs for the application and development of ESG related solutions, sharing their achievements at the showcase. The Digital Sandbox presentations included China Credit Information Service Ltd., Unity Sustainability Services Co., Ltd., E.SUN Commercial Bank, Taiwan Shin Kong Commercial Bank Co., Ltd., Hua Nan Commercial Bank, Ltd., FIC Global, Inc., and ASUSTeK Computer Inc. presenting ''Technology Manufacturing Supply Chain Green Finance and Sustainability Action Indicators''. In the Corporate Lab section, Shanghai Commercial and Savings Bank, Ltd. and GreenHope shared information on the ''Corporate Sustainability and Green Lifestyle Cooperation'' project, promoting green consumption through self-provided containers in college communities. Consumers uploading green consumption receipts to the ''Tanji'' website can accumulate carbon credits and receive rewards from Shanghai Commercial and Savings Bank, thus earning acknowledgement of their green-friendly consumption behavior. This creates green benefits through carbon and waste reduction.
The FSC stated that through this Showcase, the award-winning financial institutions, startups, and resource-investing teams demonstrate their innovative technologies and business models. In addition, the Showcase also aimed to stimulate the development of Taiwan's Green FinTech ecosystem. Given the broad scope of Green FinTech, many aspects are poised for further development. Therefore, the FSC plans to continue organizing green (sustainable) FinTech-related activities in the FinTech Development Roadmap 2.0, including conducting surveys, holding competitions, and hosting showcases to enhance the engagement of financial institutions, FinTech companies, and the general public. The FSC also encourages startups and financial institutions to invest in research and development of relevant technologies, thereby contributing to achievement of Taiwan's 2050 Net-Zero Goal.
