Foreign bank branches in Taiwan have demonstrated steady and robust growth in their business operations

2026-08-20
The Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) stated that there are currently 28 foreign banks with branches established in Taiwan. Of these, 13 are headquartered in the Asia-Pacific region, 9 in Europe, and 6 in North America. As of the end of June 2026, the total assets of foreign bank branches in Taiwan reached NT$4.2103 trillion, while net worth stood at NT$168.5 billion, representing year-on-year increases of 8.18% and 11.22%, respectively, compared with NT$3.8921 trillion and NT$151.5 billion at the end of June 2025. In terms of profitability, foreign bank branches in Taiwan recorded pre-tax profits of NT$13.922 billion in the first half of 2026, up 6.71% from NT$13.047 billion in the same period of 2025. Overall, foreign bank branches in Taiwan recorded year-on-year growth in total assets, net worth, and profitability, while asset quality remained sound, with the non-performing loan (NPL) ratio at only approximately 0.01%. These figures demonstrate the stable operation of foreign bank branches in Taiwan, with continued growth in both asset scale and profitability.

Foreign banks have continued to increase their investment in Taiwan. By expanding their operations and business presence in Taiwan, they have demonstrated their commitment to deepening their engagement in the Taiwanese market, while also reflecting international financial institutions’ continued confidence in the development potential of Taiwan’s economy and financial markets. In addition to continuing to develop corporate banking services and providing a wide range of services, including corporate lending, trade finance, cross-border financial services, and cash management, foreign bank branches in Taiwan leverage their global operating networks and international market expertise to assist Taiwanese enterprises in expanding into overseas markets and improving the efficiency of cross-border financial services. In recent years, in line with the government’s policy to promote Taiwan as an Asian asset management hub, foreign banks have also actively developed wealth management, asset allocation, and services for high-asset customers, offering a broader and more diverse range of financial products and professional advisory services. These efforts have contributed to enhancing the international competitiveness of Taiwan’s financial markets.

The FSC will continue to monitor the financial and business development of foreign bank branches in Taiwan, urging them to maintain sound financial structures, strengthen risk management, and preserve high-quality assets. The FSC will also encourage foreign banks to further deepen their investment and service capabilities in Taiwan and strengthen cooperation with domestic financial institutions in areas including corporate financing, capital markets, wealth management, and sustainable finance. Through these efforts, the FSC aims to jointly promote the development of Taiwan’s financial markets toward greater resilience, internationalization, and sustainability.
