Asset Quality of Domestic Banks
Total outstanding loans extended by the current 38 domestic banks increased NT$36.9 billion (US$1.26 billion) as compared to the number of previous month and amounted to NT$22,004.1 billion (US$752.74 billion) at the end of April 2012. Meanwhile, the NPLs of these banks totaled at NT$136.4 billion (US$4.67 billion) which increased by NT$40 billion (US$1.37 billion) from NT$96.4 billion (US$3.3 billion) as of the end of previous month, mainly resulted from the delinquent exposure of NT$46.4 billion (US$1.59 billion) to ProMOS Technologies Inc. With an increase of 0.18 percentage point, the average NPL ratio of the 38 banks rose to 0.62% up from 0.44% at the end of previous month. Among the 38 domestic banks in Taiwan, 37 banks operated with NPL ratios under 2%. The coverage ratios of allowances for NPLs decreased by 77.78 percentage points and therefore fell to a figure of 177.69% from 255.47% of the previous month. It revealed that the appearance of the asset quality of domestic banks continuously remained manageable according to the above figures as of the end of April 2012. The Financial Supervisory Commission will not be complacent and will request those banks with higher NPL ratios to undertake measures to improve asset quality and financial structure on an ongoing basis.
