2024-04-22
The Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) and the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are set to jointly hold a “U.S. SEC Regional Training Program” from April 22 to April 25, 2024. This will be the third time the FSC and the SEC have jointly held the training program, after having previously done so in 2015 and 2018.
The attendees will include representatives from securities supervisory authorities, stock exchanges, and central securities depository institutions in countries including South Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, India, and Sri Lanka. In addition, representatives from securities self-regulatory organizations will also attend the training program.
The program aims to offer securities regulators and capital market participants the opportunity to learn from international financial supervisory authorities. The speakers will include Mr. Paul A. Gumagay (Associate Director in the SEC Office of International Affairs), Mr. Nitish Bahadur (Strategic Risk Coordinator / Quantitative Researcher in the SEC Division of Examinations), Ms. Celeste M. Murphy (Senior Special Counsel in the SEC Office of International Affairs), and Mr. Brent S. Mitchell (Attorney-Advisor in the SEC Enforcement Division’s Office of the Director). The topics of the training program will cover important issues currently faced by international market regulators, such as capital raising and crowdfunding, conflict of interest, crypto asset enforcement, insider trading, and financial accounting and disclosure fraud by public companies. The speakers will use case studies to encourage attendees to communicate and exchange their opinions and ideas.
Global securities markets are faced with various regulatory challenges. The SEC, with its leading role in the U.S. capital market, has abundant practical experience with respect to the issues mentioned above and can offer valuable lessons to other supervisory authorities. Through this training program, the FSC hopes to strengthen cooperation with the SEC and peer regulators in Asia. With more interaction and communication, the latest regulatory thinking can be applied to each nation’s capital market which will support robust global capital market.
